Board of Education Regular Meeting

April 16, 2007

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #330 held its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2007, in the Board Room in Heron Lake.  Harvey Kruger, John Volk, Dale Hesemann, John Stenzel, Jill Liepold and ex officio Becky Cselovszki, Superintendent, were present.  Larry Diemer was not present until the end of the meeting.  Deb Mathias, Tracy Freking, Cindy Owen, and Donna Damm were also present.

 

John Stenzel, chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  A quorum was declared with five of six members present.  Kruger moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the agenda with the additional items.  The motion carried unanimously.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Kruger, to approve minutes of the March 20, 2007 regular Board meeting.  The motion carried unanimously.  Kruger moved, seconded by Hesemann, to approve the Treasurer’s report given by chairman Stenzel.  The motion carried unanimously.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Liepold, to approve the payment of the bills.  The motion carried unanimously.

Deb Mathias gave the Athletic Director’s report.  She presented the following coaching recommendations for the ’07-’08 school year:  Football - Jason Fisher, Jeff Drent, Tom Schultz, Chris Nauman and Blaise Jacobson.  VolleyballRick Haberman, Crystal Fredin and Donna Cook.  Cheerleading – Tracy Freking.  Girl’s Basketball – Les Knutson, Dane Nielsen and Crystal Fredin.  Boy’s Basketball – Tim Owen and Doyle Zellar. Softball – Les Knutson, Gary Correll and Deb Mathias.  Baseball – Tim Owen, Chris Naumann and Blaise Jacobsen.  Track – John Cselovszki and Jason Fisher.  Golf – Deb Jaycox.  SpeechJulie Place.  Knowledge Bowl – Barb Pohlman and Sharon Carter.  Student CouncilJen Koep.  NHS – Barb Pohlman.  Jr. Class Advisor – Dorothy Wagner.  Sr. Class AdvisorChris Elzenga and Brenda Renczykowski.  FFA AdvisorKeith Place.  We will be advertising to fill other open coaching positions. Programs and numbers of projected participants were reviewed.  Kruger moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the coaching recommendations as presented.  The motion carried unanimously.  

 

Mathias then gave the TEAM report.  The Elementary Arts Festival will be on April 23 at 6:30.  The Elementary spring concert will be on April 30, at 7:00, in the High School.  NWEA testing will take place from May 1- 9, for grades K-6.  Judy Stenzel will have Kindergarten orientation on

May 4.  The School Patrol will be going to the Twins game on May 10.

 

Cindy Owen gave the Dean of Student report.  Mid Quarter conferences will be held on April 23.  On April 25, the National Honor Society will be taking their trip.  Prom will be held on April 28.  The Board is invited to the Senior Class breakfast on May 22.  Scholarships will be given at this time.  The Graduation program is being planned. Board members ideas for the ceremony will be considered.

 

Becky Cselovszki gave the Superintendent report.  There are eleven students signed up for PSEO for the ’07-’08 school year.  This could cost the District between $30,000 and $60,000.  She will be publishing a letter explaining PSEO and its effect on the District. New courses that are offered at SSC next year are Forensic Science, Small Animal Science, Plant Science, Ag Economics, Photo Shop, Creative Stitchery, and Lifeguarding.  Doyle Zellar will be teaching an AP college writing course during second semester. The tenth grade completed the writing graduation standard test and 90% passed. 

 

Donna Damm purposed to the Board a wage increase for the lifeguards. Information about a slide and safety steps with handrail for the pool was also presented.  Concerns from the Board about lifeguard supervision were discussed.  There will be two or more staff members that will be sent to be Certified Pool Operators.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Liepold, to approve the wage increase for the lifeguards, effective March 1.  The motion carried unanimously.  

 

Stenzel moved, seconded by Hesemann, to approve a fundraiser for the Golf team.  They will be selling food products to purchase balls and bags with logos. The motion passed unanimously. 

 

Hesemann moved, seconded by Volk to approve the retirement request of bus driver Ray Bleess at the end of the school year.  He has been a driver for the District since 1983.  The motion carried unanimously.  The Board would like to thank Ray for his years of service. 

 

Superintendent Cselovszki proposed additions and reductions for the ’07-’08 school year.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the proposal.  The motion carried unanimously. 

 

Stenzel moved, seconded by Hesemann, the RESOLUTION relating to the termination and non-renewal of the teaching contract of Jennifer Schoenfeld, a probationary teacher.  Voting in favor:  ALL (Stenzel, Volk, Kruger, Hesemann, and Liepold). Voting against: NONE.  The RESOLUTION carried. 

 

Hesemann moved, seconded by Volk to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried unanimously.
