Board of Education Regular Meeting

March 20, 2007

 

The Board of Education of Independent School District #330 held its regular meeting on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, in the Media Center in Okabena.  Larry Diemer, Harvey Kruger, John Volk, Dale Hesemann, John Stenzel, Jill Liepold, and ex officio Becky Cselovszki, Superintendent, were present.  Cindy Owen, Deb Mathias, and Tracy Freking were also present. 

 

John Stenzel, chairman, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  A quorum was declared with all members present.  Kruger moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the agenda with the additional items.  The motion carried unanimously. Hesemann moved, seconded by Diemer, to approve the minutes of the February 20, 2007 regular Board meeting as presented.  The motion carried unanimously.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Liepold, to approve the Treasurer’s report.  The motion carried unanimously.  Volk moved, seconded by Kruger, to approve the payment of the bills.  The motion carried unanimously.

Deb Mathias gave the Activity Director’s report. There is a total of 44 boys from grades 6-12 out for baseball.  There is a total of 36 girls out from grades 6-12 out for softball.  There are 25 girls and 14 boys, in grades 6-12, out for track and 15 boys and 7 girls, in grades 6-12, out for golf. The Winter Sports Banquet will be on March 25 at Emerald Valley.  The speech participants will be having a public performance on March 22. 

 

Mathias then gave the TEAM report.  On March 30 the student council will be giving the elementary school a movie day for winning the Stuff-The-Bus food drive.  Kindergarten conferences will be on March 27.  First and second grade teachers will also be having conferences on April 10-11.  MCA II testing will begin on April 16.

 

Cindy Owen gave the Dean of Students report.  The band/choir large group contest will be on March 20 in Springfield.  After competing, most of the students will be going for their trip to Chanhassen, U of M Art Museum, The Minnesota Science Museum, Orchestra Hall, and the Mall of America. The seniors will be leaving for their trip to New York on March 27. Tracy Freking and Jason Fisher will be chaperoning.  The end of third quarter will be on March 28, with an early out on March 30.  Spring break will be April 5-9. The spring play entitled “Dress Rehearsal for Murder!” will be on April 12-13.

 

Becky Cselovszki gave the superintendent’s report.  The HLOCF silent auction was held on March 17 and raised about $9,000. Registration for classes for the ’07-’08 school year has started.  There are some new classes being offered.  She is still encouraging staff members to qualify to teach AP classes at SSC.

 

Stenzel moved, seconded by Diemer, to approve the ’07-’08 school year calendar.  The motion carried unanimously.  Diemer moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the amended ’06-’07 school year.  The motion carried unanimously. 

Diemer moved, seconded by Hesemann, to approve an open enrollment elementary student from the Brewster District for the’07-’08 school year.  The motion carried unanimously.  Stenzel moved, seconded by Hesemann, to approve the open enrollment of two secondary students from the Windom District for the ’06-’07 fourth quarter.  The motion carried unanimously. 

 

The 1996 Windstar minivan was involved in an accident and was declared totaled.  Hesemann moved, seconded by Diemer, to authorize advertising for bids for a new minivan. The motion carried unanimously. 

 

Superintendent Cselovszki read the resignation request from Deb McKeown. She would like to resign at the end of the ’06-’07 school year.  She had been teaching since 1972 and had been instrumental in early elementary teaching and development of the all-day Kindergarten at SSC.  Kruger moved, seconded by Volk, to approve the request.  The motion carried unanimously.  The Board would like to thank Deb McKeown for her many years of service to the Heron Lake-Okabena School District.

 

Superintendent Cselovszki reminded the Board that our next regular meeting will be on Monday, April 16, following a Meet-and-Confer at the Elementary School in Heron Lake.

 

Volk moved, seconded by Kruger, to adjourn the meeting.  The motion carried unanimously.
